Machinist

The Machinist is responsible for setup, operation, and maintenance of CNC and manual machines to produce precision parts according to blueprints, CAD models, and job travelers. The role requires a strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, inspection methods, and shop safety. Machinists at BlackFish are expected to maintain a clean, organized workspace

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC and manual machines (mills, lathes, saws, and grinders).
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, and work orders.
  • Select proper tooling, speeds, and feeds for materials and operations.
  • Measure and verify parts using micrometers, calipers, CMMs, and precision gauges.
  • Maintain tight tolerances and surface finishes per specifications.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and report issues to supervision.
  • Keep work area and equipment clean, organized, and safe at all times.
  • Participate in daily cleanup and end-of-shift inspection of work area.
  • Collaborate with engineers, welders, and fabricators on complex assemblies.
  • Identify opportunities to improve setup efficiency and part quality.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical/vocational training preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years’ machining experience (CNC and/or manual).
  • Ability to read and interpret complex drawings and models.
  • Proficient in precision measurement and inspection.
  • Experience with G-code editing and CAM software (Mastercam, SolidCAM, or similar) preferred.
  • Understanding of metal types, cutting speeds, and tool wear.
  • Must pass ITAR eligibility requirements (U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident).
  • Strong attention to detail, safety, and quality workmanship.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Work involves exposure to noise, oil, and industrial environments.
  • Use of PPE including safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, and hearing protection required.

Performance Expectations

  • Maintain productivity targets based on shop scheduling and job travelers.
  • Ensure 100% accuracy in part measurement and documentation.
  • Complete daily cleanup and tool organization before shift end.
  • Report broken tools, damaged machines, or unsafe conditions immediately.
